Recession Bush

[gallery]

A sad sight on the Askew Road today, another shop that has been there for as long certainly as I have been in the area has been closed due to its owners going into administration. I remember the shop was Threshers before but then changed from red to blue and became WineRack.

I've seen quite a few of these in W12 in the last few months, and hope those who lost their jobs land on their feet.

  1. The guy who runs WineRack is the friendliest, nicest shopkeeper in the neighbourhood. He has a young family. It's really sad - especially as the shop itself does quite well - it's the group that's been run into the ground by poor management. I know the supermarkets are a threat and we're in recession, but Majestic don't seem too bothered - their pre-tax profits rose 9% over the last 6 months.
Hope the manager and the other guys who work there can find something to pay the rent and put food on the table. £60/week dole is an insult to anyone trying to get by in a city as expensive as this.

  3. we are very pleased! As Rupert says, Mallek and his colleague Ishmael are such lovely friendly neighbourhood people. Today I saw a young couple pass by and the guy dragged the girl excitedly over saying 'look, he's coming back!'...fingers crossed for them.....
