Acid attack: Katie Piper speaks out

Katie PiperThe woman who was raped and then permanently disfigured by two Shepherd's Bush men will be speaking about her experiences on a channel 4 programme on October 29th at 2100.

You can read her account, which she gave to the News of the World here. What still amazes and frankly disgusts me about this case, apart from the brutality of what was done to this woman, was the pathetic nature of the sentence handed down to one of the men who carried out the act of hurling acid into a defenceless woman's face. Stefan Sylvestre received just a few years.

When I wrote this article I wondered if I had gone over the top - but if anything I didnt go far enough.

It's something I will be raising when I meet some of those who pass sentence on W12 criminals at this meeting. Will report back.

  1. Natural justice would mean something horrific happen to these 2 men.. That however, will not help that girl any.

  2. Katie's story has shocked the nation and has given the issue of acid violence some well needed awareness in the UK. Unfortunately, Katie is not the first and is unlikely to be the last victim of such a brutal attack.
This attack (amongst others) illustrates the point that acid violence is a global phenomenon, that although acid attacks occur in significant numbers in African, South Asian and South-East Asian countries, it is shocking to see just how widespread this is across the world, from the Third World, to the First.

The Acid Survivors Trust International is a charity working in support of women just like Katie: women, men and children heavily scared who have suffered terrible, inhumane injuries.

Although men and children also get attacked (in growing numbers!), we can’t lose sight of the fact that this is quite possibly the worst form of violence against women. No one deserves to be attacked with acid - substances strong enough to clean the rustiest of metals. Acid throwers act cruelly and deliberately. We must all make a stand that this simply can not go on!

  3. I agree - but just as a piece of advice which I hope is helpful - you might want to tell people how they can help you make that stand.
