Best Bush Pub: Defector's Weld

Defector's Weld: Best Bush Pub of 2012 as voted by Bushers
287 people have been voting in the last week on a vexed question - just which of the many pubs in the Bush is the best? We started with a detailed, and sometimes fiery, debate on which of the many should make it on to the ballot paper of the top 10.

Then, and for the past week, just under 300 people gave their verdict and it was fairly clear. The top three sharing the medals were:

Gold: The Defector's Weld on the Green with a commanding 110 votes
Silver: The Princess Victoria on Uxbridge Road with 63 votes
Bronze: The Eagle on Askew Road with 27

Of the remaining seven, the Queen Adelaide on Uxbridge Road was tied with the Anglesea Arms just over from Ravenscourt Park for fourth place, while the Crown & Sceptre off Cathnor Park Road took fifth. The Goldhawk came sixth while the Conningham Arms and The Green took joint seventh. The Grand Union brought up the rear.

This vote of course came just after the Bush was rent asunder by another keenly fought contest over the Best Bush Curryhouse, which was won by the Nepalese Tandoori. I thought what was better about this contest was the debate about why you preferred this one or that one, even if it did get a bit rough and tumble at times.

But for now many congratulations to the Defector's, who can bask in the glory of being the Best Bush Pub of 2012!

Frankly I quite fancy a pint this evening, so guess where I might end up...

  1. Well, it's not to my tastes. I prefer all five of the rest of the top six.

    But congratulations to Defectors nonetheless!

  2. Just hope they take notice of the fact that many people have a negative with this pub regards the attitude of the bar staff........

  3. Personally I think there is nothing wrong with the attitude of the bar staff, and who has ever worked in a pub would understand how difficult and stressful could be working with people that are out drinking and are totally disrespectful of the staff!! If you are nice with them I'm sure they will be nice to you too!

  4. agreed with anonymous at 13.36. bar staff are underpaid, overworked and still expected to be happy every second they're behind the bar, sometimes 12, 13 hours into a shift? not likely.

  5. I have in the past worked in a bar. The conditions are not great however the customer should be the priority-the staff in the Weld are bad compared to the other bars on the list. I think that is what people are getting at.

  7. This place won? God! Yuppies on the inside and over zealous bouncers on the outside. I never went back.

  8. It's a very odd place. It used to be an Edwards, which was a pretty naff chain of 'bars' - and was then turned into the strangely named Defectors Weld a few years back. It was then painted black, and the music policy was changed to dark gothic shouty techno - or at least that is the genre I think it was. They then embarked on employing clinically depressed staff who appeared to have found it difficult to get out of bed in the morning, let alone muster a smile for hapless punters.

Its generally a pub for transients roughly divided into 3 categories; concert goers who don't want to be seen in an O'Neils, arty-farty BBC bores on their way home on a Friday, and the inevitable peppering of crack-heads and bag thiefs blowing in from the Green (this can be taken to mean the pub or the common ground opposite).

I'm sure there's some cool young posh kids who have moved into the Bush to enjoy its diversity (before they get tired of being mugged and move back to the home counties), who love the place - but the truth is it's a crap pub.

If you're a visitor or resident planning a trip - do go and form your own opinion, but also move on deeper into the Bush and try out some of the other pubs listed, there you'll find a truer flavour of what the area has to offer.

    1. I think that for someone that doesn't like this pub you know far too much about it!

    2. Quite, Anastasia. Not the perfect pub, but some decent armchairs and a good range of continental lagers, nonetheless.

    3. "but the truth is it's a crap pub" cit. from this to "Not the perfect pub" cit. ?! Anyway the only odd think that I see here is you and your opinions, as I said before you know a lot about Defectors, if you don't like a pub just avoid going there, but after all you said you must have spent years in there!! That brings me at the conclusion "why you keep going there if you don't like it? Just go to an other pub and stop complaining about it!"

    4. Did it occur to your miniscule brain that there were 2 different posters, posting 2 different views above?

  11. Congratulations to Defectors. It's a great pub and I've always had a laugh there. The staff are really friendly, unless you're a bit of a prat and so deserve all the treatment you get!
